Baker founded Umbanet Inc., a software technology company, in April, 2000. Based in New York, Umbanet has created the next generation of email technology with software that is designed to greatly increase the security, volume, speed and efficiency of Internet business transactions while simultaneously reducing costs to vendors.

Software design has been the basis of Ms. Baker's career. In 1992, she founded Intellinet, Inc., which developed and patented new types of software technologies to be licensed to others for commercialization and was funded by grants from the National Science Foundation.

Umbanet evolved from an Intellinet research project to develop software to help young children learn by communicating with one another through email. In designing this new communications technology, Ms. Baker saw it could be applied to many areas of children's education and initially formed KidCode Inc. to market the product. Realizing that the product could be an enabling technology in the areas of e-commerce transactions and business communications, Umbanet Inc. was formed to exploit the business opportunity.

Ms. Baker began her career as a computer scientist during her years as a graduate research assistant at Columbia University's Computer Science Department (1985-1992). In this capacity, she was involved in the early development of the Internet and designed a series of software technologies that are integral to the way people use the Internet today.

Simultaneously, Ms. Baker was employed at IBM as a researcher in their Multimedia Systems Analysis Group (1990-1993). Prior to her work with IBM, she worked with the Artificial Intelligence Group at Bolt, Beranek and Newman, Inc. (1986-88).

During the mid-90's, Ms. Baker served as a consultant for the British Council for Social and Economic Research (1994-1995) and as the Director of Technology for the Collegiate School in New York City (1995-1996).

She holds patents for software systems in network management, fault detection technologies, and operating system interfaces in the US, Japan and Europe.

After receiving her B.A. in Economics from SUNY College in Purchase in 1980, Ms. Baker got a Masters degree in Economics in 1984 and her Masters in Computer Science in 1985, both from Columbia University.
